The 5-Second Rule for Small Business

by | May 24, 2024

In the digital age, first impressions are everything. When a potential customer clicks on your website, you have mere seconds to capture their attention before they decide to leave.

This critical window can determine whether you gain a new customer or lose them forever.

So, how can you ensure your website hooks visitors immediately? Let’s dive into four essential elements your homepage header needs to hook your customer and keep them scrolling.

4 Elements of a Successful Small Business Website Header

For your small business’s website header to be successful, it needs to answer four crucial questions in less than five seconds.

1. Who Are You?

This is easy! The answer to this questions is your business’s logo (assuming it clearly says your business name).

Your logo is more than just a design; it’s the first answer visitors seek. Positioned at the top left corner of your homepage, your logo immediately tells visitors who you are. This simple yet crucial element sets the stage for brand recognition and trust.

2. What Do You Do?

Your homepage title (H1) should clearly state what your business does. This should be front and center on the screen, leaving no room for confusion. The title should be direct and easy to understand, giving visitors an immediate sense of your business’s purpose (the problem you solve).

Too many small businesses put their brand name in the H1 title of the page. This is redundant and not necessary. When you put the exact thing you do in the H1 title, it serves two purposes.

  1. It makes it crystal clear what problem you solve for customers.
  2. It lets search engines like Google know what you do so they can serve you in search queries.

Your small business will likely perform well in searches for your brand name whether you put your name in the H1 of your homepage or not. So we suggest skipping it and putting in the term people search to find your solution. If you’re running a locally-based business, drop your city there too.

  • Indianapolis House Painters
  • HVAC Repair
  • Personal Jeweler

You get the idea.

3. How Does It Make My Life Better?

Underneath your H1, an aspirational or “success-focused” statement (H2) should explain how your product or service benefits the visitor. This statement connects with their desire for improvement and resonates personally.

Think about what success looks like for your customer (not for you). What future do they want to achieve by utilizing your services. State it clearly.

  • A beautiful and fresh home
  • A cool respit in the summer heat
  • An engagement ring she can’t say no to

4. How Do I Buy It?

A clear and prominent call-to-action (CTA) is essential. Your CTA buttons should be located at the top right and center of your page, and mince no words as to what you want you customers to do next.

Avoid generalities like “Learn More” or “Contact Us” in favor of clear calls to action like “Call Now,” “Buy now,” “Book a call,” or “Talk to an expert.”

The biggest mistake most small businesses make on their websites is either having no call to action button or a vague call to action.

What is the ONE THING people need to do to hire you? Just say it.
